Cable Tool Percussion Drilling
Often referred to as "Shell and Auger" drilling, this is one of the oldest techniques of making a borehole, going back as far as the ancient Chinese.
Generally the technique utilises a tripod rig, which is often towed as a self-contained trailer and simply erected at each borehole position.
The borehole is advanced by a variety of tools, with the help of gravity and a free-fall winch.
Widely used for geotechnical ground investigations where the need to assess the engineering properties of the overburden is required and the establishment of rockhead depth.
Whilst extremely effective in both cohesive (clays) and non-cohesive (sands and gravels) soil types it does become limited when rock or large obstructions are encountered.
With a wide variety of sampling and in-situ testing methods available, it will remain the predominant method of drilling shallow boreholes, due to its low cost and minimum disruption.
